Many classes are currently taking part in new teaching initiatives. This follows recent training undertaken by teachers in Scoil Mhuire provided by the PDST (Professional Development Service for Teachers) in the area of Mathematics.
In Junior and Senior Infants an exciting new programme “Ready Set Go Maths” is almost ready to start. This is a hands on programme where children work in groups using concrete materials and playing maths games to consolidate learning.
Station teaching in maths is also being introduced to 1st / 2nd classes. Teachers target areas of difficulty and provide many opportunities for children to work in small groups using concrete materials and play specifically targeted games to reinforce learning of specific areas.
SGLI (Small Group Literacy Instruction) is also taking place from 3rd to 6th Class in this term. This is a follow on from our very successful Literacy Lift Off programme run from Juniors to Second class. SGLI is a period of up to 1 hour focusing on all aspects of literacy. Children are grouped and read books targeted to their level as well as working on other activities such as writing, comprehension and word work.
Literacy Lift Off will resume in the last term for Junior and Senior infants.
